Statement by Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Accession of Croatia to the European Union

- The Republic of Croatia was approved for membership in the European Union (EU) at a meeting of the European Council that took place on June 27 and June 28. Japan offers its congratulation to Croatia on becoming a member of the EU and expects that its membership will contribute to the further development of Japan-EU relations as well as bilateral relations.
- Japan shares universal values with the EU, such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Japan also shares special responsibilities with the EU in the international community. At the opportunity of Croatia’s accession to the European Union from today, Japan intends to deepen cooperation with Croatia beyond the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
