Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Presidential Election in Iran

  1. The presidential election held on June 14 in the Islamic Republic of Iran elected Dr. Hassan Rouhani. The Government of Japan expects Iran, reflecting the will of the Iranian people shown at the election, to play an important role for the stability and peace in the Middle East under the President-elect Dr. Rouhani.
  2. The Government of Japan on its part, based on its traditional relationship with Iran, will continue to work with Iran so that Iran, as a responsible member of the international community, effectively addresses issues of the international community, above all its nuclear issue.
  3. The Government of Japan hopes that the new Government of Iran under Dr. Rouhani will conduct serious dialogues with the international community and make concrete progress towards a peaceful solution of its nuclear issues.
