Approval of Japan’s application for observer status in the Arctic Council
May 15, 2013
- On May 15, Japan was admitted as an observer in the Arctic Council at its 8th Ministerial Meeting held in Kiruna, Sweden. Japan, having submitted its application for observer status in the Council in July 2009, welcomes that observer status was granted to Japan at this time.
- On a more stable footing as an observer, Japan intends to participate in various meetings of the Council and to contribute to the work of the Council in more proper form by cooperating with Member States of the Council and indigenous peoples living in the Arctic Circle as well as through participating in Working Groups of the Council.
