G7 Sherpa Video Teleconference
August 31, 2023
On August 31, commencing at 8:00 pm (JST), for approximately 20 minutes, a G7 Sherpa Video Teleconference was held. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Mr. ONO Keiichi, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and the G7 Sherpa of Japan, took this occasion to explain the ongoing situation including Japan’s efforts regarding the discharge of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) treated water into the sea at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In particular, he emphasized that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Comprehensive Report concluded that the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea is consistent with relevant international safety standards, and would have a negligible impact on people and the environment. He also explained that even after starting the discharge, Japan has been continuing to publicize various monitoring data in a timely and highly transparent manner and the IAEA also confirmed and announced the concentration of tritium in the water being discharged far below the regulatory standards, highlighting that these data indicated no problem from the scientific point of view.
- In response to this, other G7 members expressed their understanding, and affirmed their welcome to Japan’s transparent efforts with the IAEA based on scientific evidence.
