Japan-Argentine Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Working Lunch

On August 30, commencing at 12:40 p.m., Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a foreign ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Santiago Andrés Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of the Argentine Republic, who is visiting Japan, for approximately 35 minutes, and subsequently held a working lunch for approximately 55 minutes.
Since August 30 is Minister Cafiero’s birthday, Minister Hayashi celebrated it with a birthday cake at the working lunch.
The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi welcomed Minister Cafiero’s first visit to Japan, and expressed his pleasure at their reciprocal visits being realized this year, which marks the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Argentina. He also welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on Diplomatic Training.
- The two ministers exchanged views towards the further strengthening of the bilateral relations, and shared the view that the two countries would promote trade and investment as well as science and technology cooperation in the Antarctica and other areas.
- Regarding the recently initiated discharge of ALPS treated water into the ocean, Minister Hayashi explained Japan's position, referring to the IAEA's assessment in its Comprehensive Report, and Minister Cafiero stated that Argentina trusts the IAEA and supports Japan's efforts in cooperation with the agency.
- The two ministers exchanged views on cooperation in regional and international affairs, including Russia's aggression against Ukraine. They shared the view that the two countries would continue working together during the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi and the UN General Assembly High-Level Week next month.
