Number of Visas Issued in 2022

- The total number of visas issued by all Japanese embassies, consulates, and consular offices in 2022 was 1,294,148, an increase of approximately 1,333% from 2021. This increase can be attributed to the relaxation of border measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in 2022 compared to the previous year, when visa issuance was significantly restricted.
- When ranked by nationalities and regions, the top three recipients of Japanese visas were China, Vietnam, and the Philippines which accounted for nearly 40% of the total number of visas issued. Among the overseas establishments of Japan that issued visas, Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, Embassy of Japan in Korea were the top three missions issuing visas. The top 10 missions were all in Asia.

The number of visas issued differs from the number of foreign nationals entering Japan which is released by the Immigration Services Agency as there are cases of using multiple visas and visa exemption.
