Courtesy call on Foreign Minister HAYASHI by Senator Tammy Duckworth, United States Senate

On February 21nd, commencing at 1:10 p.m., for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from United States Senator Tammy Duckworth. An overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi welcomed Senator Duckworth’s visit to Japan and explained the outcomes of Prime Minister Kishida and Minister Hayashi’s visits to the U.S. in January. Minister Hayashi also expressed his hope for cooperation with Senator Duckworth, who supports U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. Minister Hayashi and Senator Duckworth then exchanged views on the Japan-U.S. Alliance and on securing peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Senator Duckworth expressed her support for Japan’s new “National Security Strategy”.
  3. Furthermore, they shared the view that regional economic engagement by Japan and the U.S., as well as bilateral cooperation on economic security matters, including supply chains and energy, are crucial in order to secure peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. In this context, Minister Hayashi expressed Japan’s support for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and Japan’s position on the TPP.
