Japan-Turkmenistan Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On December 24, commencing at 3:15 p.m.for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rashid MEREDOV, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan who is visiting Japan to attend the 9th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the "Central Asia plus Japan" Dialogue. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi referred to the recent rapid expansion of the deepening bilateral relations in the fields such as large-scale economic projects and the promotion of Japanese language education. He stated that he would like to continue to work closely with Deputy Chairman and Foreign Minister Meredov to further strengthen the partnership between Japan and Turkmenistan and to expand cooperation in a wide range of areas on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
- Minister Hayashi also stated that Japan would like to cooperate as much as possible to ensure the stable development of Turkmenistan, which has abundant natural resources, while the international community is facing soaring energy prices and other challenges following Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
- In response, Deputy Chairman and Foreign Minister Meredov said he would like to further strengthen political dialogue with Japan and deepen discussions on various topics, including regional stability. The Ministers agreed to strengthen economic relations, including in the area of decarbonisation, as well as to enhance cooperation in the fields of education and culture.
- The two Ministers exchanged views on the current international situation as well as cooperation in the international arena and confirmed that they will continue to work closely together in various fields.
