Japan-Lithuania Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On August 17, commencing at 4p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Gabrielius LANDSBERGIS, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his wish to take bilateral relations to a higher level during this year, which marks the 100th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Lithuania. The two ministers concurred on further strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
  2. Regarding the situation in Ukraine, the two foreign ministers shared the view that it is necessary for like-minded countries to cooperate in order to stop the aggression by Russia as soon as possible. Foreign Minister Landsbergis responded that he highly appreciated Japan's efforts.
  3. The two foreign ministers shared serious concerns about the recent amplification of China’s military activities, and confirmed the importance of the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
  4. The two foreign ministers confirmed that they would continue to cooperate on economic coercion against Lithuania and the response to North Korea, including nuclear and missile issues as well as the abduction issue, and they also exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena and agreed to further strengthen their ties in the future.
