Meeting between Senior Deputy Minister Yamada and U.S. Under Secretary of State Nuland

On July 25, Mr. YAMADA Shigeo, Senior Deputy Foreign Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Ambassador Victoria Nuland, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, while her visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Under Secretary Nuland expressed her deepest condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe. The two sides concurred to continue working closely together toward further strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance and realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” carrying on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe.
  2. The two sides discussed a wide range of topics including the Japan-U.S. relationships such as the Japan-U.S. Economic Policy Consultative Committee (the Economic “2+2”) to be held in July and the strengthening of the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, and regional issues such as the situation in Ukraine.
  3. The two sides confirmed to continue working closely together, including discussions for the next year’s G7 Hiroshima Summit, to which Japan holds the presidency.
