Japan-UK Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On April 5, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for about 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with the Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Minister for Women and Equalities of the United Kingdom, who is visiting Poland. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi explained that he had returned to Japan from Poland with displaced people from Ukraine who had difficulty in securing means of travel on their own. In response, Secretary Truss spoke highly of the initiative.
- The two ministers exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and were deeply shocked by the atrocities committed in the suburbs of Kyiv, and strongly condemned Russia for the killing of innocent civilians, which is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and absolutely unforgivable. They also reaffirmed the need for the international community, with the G7 taking the lead, to maintain pressure including sanctions in order to safeguard the foundations of the international order.
- The two ministers also discussed cooperation to realize a "free and open Indo-Pacific," and confirmed that they would continue to work together, including at the face-to-face G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting in two days.
