Meeting between Senior Deputy Minister Suzuki and U.S. Under Secretary of State Fernandez

On December 13, commencing at 11 a.m. (for approximately 2 hours), Senior Deputy Minister SUZUKI Hiroshi, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Under Secretary of state for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, Jose W. Fernandez while visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Senior Deputy Minister Suzuki welcomed the visit of Under Secretary Fernandez to Japan. Senior Deputy Minister Suzuki also stated that he hopes to accelerate cooperation on the follow-up of the development on Japan-U.S Competitiveness and Resilience (CoRe) Partnership launched at the Japan-U.S. Summit in April 2021, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of both countries as well as deepening Japan-U.S. cooperation in addressing various challenges facing the international community and the Indo-Pacific region. In response, Under Secretary Fernandez confirmed the importance of deepening discussions on these cooperations and stated that he intends to further strengthen bilateral economic relations.
  2. Both sides had candid discussion on the international order in the Indo-Pacific region, including TPP, and bilateral collaboration on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework proposed by the U.S.
  3. Both sides also discussed Japan-U.S. cooperation on addressing global challenges facing the international community and the Indo-Pacific region.
