Iran’s announcement on the Nuclear Activities
(Statement by Press Secretary YOSHIDA Tomoyuki)

April 16, 2021
  1. On Tuesday, April 13 (local time), Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it would start producing enriched uranium up to 60%.
  2. Japan supports the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which contributes to the international non-proliferation regime and thereby to the stability of the Middle East. Japan is strongly concerned that Iran will start producing enriched uranium up to 60%, which is close to weapons-grade highly enriched uranium, while the positive dialogue on the Iran’s nuclear issue is ongoing among relevant countries.
  3. Japan strongly urges Iran to comply with the JCPOA, to refrain from provocative measures that undermine the agreement and to act in a constructive manner aiming to resolve the issue through the dialogue.
  4. Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations including the IAEA.
