Japan-Kazakhstan Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On May 20, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Mukhtar TLEUBERDI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan. The overview is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Motegi expressed his hope that the Avigan tablets, having arrived in Kazakhstan on May 14, would contribute to the progress of clinical research, and stated its readiness to provide equipment which will contribute to the improvement of the health and medical system in Kazakhstan. In response, Minister Tleuberdi expressed his appreciation for the assistances from Japan and introduced the current situation in Kazakhstan and measures taken by the Government.

2. In addition, Minister Motegi stated that it was a good example of cooperation between the two countries that 3 Japanese nationals in Kazakhstan returned to Japan and 25 Kazakh residents in Japan returned to their country together with the Avigan tablets, using the special flight from Kazakhstan. Both Ministers concurred on the importance of sharing information, lessons learned and insights on the COVID-19 with other countries and further cooperation to prevent the spread of the infection.

3. Both Ministers shared the view to promote mutual visits between the two countries after convergence of the COVID-19 so as to make full use of the potential of bilateral relations in all spheres and closely cooperate to encourage regional cooperation through the framework of the "Central Asia plus Japan" dialogue.
