Approval of the conclusion of the Japan-United States Trade Agreement and the Japan-United States Digital Trade Agreement at the Diet

1. On December 4, the conclusion of the Japan-United States Trade Agreement (PDF)Open a New Window and the Japan-United States Digital Trade Agreement (PDF)Open a New Window was approved at the Diet.

2. Japan and the United States cover approximately 30 percent of the global GDP. The entry into force of the Japan-United States Trade Agreement, together with the TPP11 and the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, which have already entered into force, will create a free economic sphere, covering approximately 60 percent of the global GDP, with Japan at its center.

3. In addition, the Japan-United States Digital Trade Agreement demonstrates high-standard rules in the area of digital trade which is expected to grow exponentially in the “data-driven” global economy.

4. Japan will continue to lead efforts to create rules designed for the 21st century and would like to aim for the further growth of the Japanese economy and the maintenance and strengthening of the free trade system.
