Announcement of the Appointment of the next Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

1. On November 21, the United Nations announced that H.E. Mr. António GUTERRES, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed H.E. Ms. Ghada WALY, the Minister of Social Solidarity of Egypt, as the next Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

2. Ms. Waly is a development professional in the field of poverty reduction and social protection, and she has been committed to a wide array of joint programmes with UN agencies as the Minister of Social Solidarity, including UNODC, UNDP and UNICEF. Japan welcomes the appointment of Ms. Waly as the Executive Director of the UNODC.

3. In April 2020, the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Kyoto Congress), of which the UNODC serves as the Secretariat, will be held in KyotoOpen a New Window. The Government of Japan, as the host country, is determined to continue working towards the success of the Kyoto Congress in close cooperation with the new Executive Director.
