Signing of the Agreement between Japan and the Kingdom of Sweden on Social Security
1. On April 11, the Agreement between Japan and the Kingdom of Sweden on Social Security (hereinafter referred to as “Agreement”) (English (PDF) / Swedish (PDF) / Japanese (PDF)) was signed in Stockholm between H.E. Mr. Shigeyuki Hiroki, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Sweden, and H.E.Ms. Annika Strandhäll, Minister of Social Security of the Kingdom of Sweden.
2. As for employees temporarily sent from Japan to the Kingdom of Sweden as well as those temporarily sent from the Kingdom of Sweden to Japan, there are currently problems such as being subject to compulsory coverage under the pension systems of both countries. The Agreement is aimed for solving these problems. Under this Agreement, the employees temporarily sent for a period of five years or less from either country to the other will be covered in principle, only by the pension system of the former country. The Agreement will also enable those employees to establish eligibility to receive pension benefits by totalizing the periods of the coverage of both countries.
3. It is expected that the conclusion of this Agreement will reduce the burden imposed on companies and employees, thereby further facilitates people-to-people and economic exchanges between Japan and the Kingdom of Sweden.
