December 17, 2018

1. The sixth round of negotiations on Japan-EU Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) will be held in Brussels on December 18 and 19, 2018.

2. This meeting will be attended on the Japanese side by Mr. Hiroaki Sano, Negotiator for Treaties, European Policy Division, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and on the EU side, Mr. Joachim Luecking, Head of Unit, Aviation Safety, and other representatives from the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport, European Commission, and other officials from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

3. The BASA aims to enable effective aviation safety oversight by avoiding duplicated inspections by aviation authorities of both Parties through the mutual acceptance of inspection results and certifications, and the cooperation in the aviation safety oversight, thus to reduce the economic burdens on the aircraft operators of Japan and the EU.
