Japan-US Consultation on US sanctions on Iran
1. On June 19th, 2018, Japan and the US had a consultation in Tokyo on US sanctions on Iran.
2. It was attended by Mr. Hiroshi Oka, Director-General/Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs for Middle Eastern and African Affairs, and officials from the Ministry of Finance, Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Cabinet Secretariat from the Japanese side, and by Dr. Christopher Ford, Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation, and officials from the Department of State and Department of Treasury from the US side.
3. At this consultation, the US side explained its new strategy on Iran following the US’ announcement on its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the reinstating sanctions on Iran. Both sides exchanged views on possible impacts of the reinstating of US sanctions on Iran. In addition, both sides also agreed to continue consultation on this issue going forward.
