April 13, 2018

1. The third round of negotiations on Japan-EU Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) will be held in Tokyo on April 16 and 17, 2018.

2. This meeting will be attended on the Japanese side by Ms. Yoshie Nakatani, Negotiator for Treaties, European Policy Division, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and on the EU side, Mr. Joachim Luecking, Head of Unit, Aviation Safety, and other representatives from the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport, European Commission, and other officials from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

3. The BASA aims to enable effective aviation safety oversight by avoiding duplicated inspections by aviation authorities of both Parties through the mutual acceptance of inspection results and certifications, and the cooperation in the aviation safety oversight, thus to reduce the economic burdens on the aircraft operators of Japan and the EU.
