Emergency Assistance to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea in Response to the Damage caused by the Earthquake
1. Today, March 2, upon the request of the Government of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, seeping pads, etc.) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Papua New Guinea in response to the damage caused by the earthquake.
2. Upon the request of the Government of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Papua New Guinea, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance to Papua New Guinea to meet its humanitarian needs.

On February 26, Papua New Guinea was hit by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake, resulting in a large number of victims and physical damage. According to the Government of Papua New Guinea, as of March 2, 67 person died and approximately 140,000 people have been affected mainly in Highlands area.
