Emergency Assistance to the Republic of Vanuatu in Response to the Eruption of Monaro volcano

1. Today, October 5, upon the request of the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency relief goods (plastic sheets, blankets) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Vanuatu in response to the damage caused by the eruption of Monaro volcano.

2. Upon the request of the Government of Vanuatu, and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Vanuatu, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance to Vanuatu to meet its humanitarian needs.

On September 25, the Government of Vanuatu declared a state of emergency in response to the increased volcanic activity of Monaro volcano on Ambae Island. The Government of Vanuatu ordered mandatory evacuation from the entire island by October 6. On October 4, almost the entire population on Ambae Island has evacuated the island.
