Emergency Assistance to Sri Lanka in response to the Damages caused by the Heavy Rainfall
1. Today, May 29, upon the request of the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (Tents, Plastic sheets, Sleeping pads, etc.) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Sri Lanka in response to the damages incurred from the floods and landslides caused by the heavy rainfall around Southern and Western areas of the country.
2. Upon the request of the Government of Sri Lanka, and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Sri Lanka, Japan decided to provide emergency assistance to Sri Lanka to meet its humanitarian needs.

Since May 24, the floods and landslides caused by the heavy rainfall around Southern and Western areas of the country resulted in a large number of those affected including the loss of lives, and much physical damage. According to the Government of Sri Lanka, as of May 28, 146 people died, 112 people have been missing, and 442,299 people have been affected.
