Congratulatory Message from Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, United States Trade Representative

May 16, 2017

On May 16 (May 15, local time), Minister for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida sent a congratulatory message to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, United States Trade Representative as follows.

Dear Ambassador Robert Lighthizer,

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment as the U.S. Trade Representative.

It is truly gratifying that the Japan-U.S. economic relations, deepened through various dialogues, have overcome the era of “friction” and been developing into that of win-win cooperation.

Japan and the U.S., namely worldwide economic leaders, bear the mission to lead the economic growth of not merely both countries, but also the Asia-Pacific region and the world. As champions of free trade, it is indispensable for both countries to coordinate with each other based on free and fair trade and investment rules.

I very much look forward to working closely with you to address regional and world economic issues including the Japan-U.S. economic relations.

Please accept my best wishes for your success and new endeavor.

Sincerely,

Fumio Kishida
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan
