Emergency Assistance to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
in Response to the Heavy Rainfall Disaster
1. Since May 15, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka suffers from floods and landslides across the country caused by the heavy rainfall around Western area. According to the Government of Sri Lanka, as of May 19, 41 people were dead, 17 people missing and approximately 420,000 people affected from heavy rainfall.
2. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister, and Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, sent messages respectively to Hon. Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka and Hon. Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka on May 19, extending condolences to the affected people and wishes for rapid rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas and conveying Japan’s readiness to provide assistance.
3. On Thursday, May 19, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (Plastic Sheets, Generator etc.) to Sri Lanka, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from Sri Lanka following serious damage from the heavy rainfall and related disasters in the country as well as in light of the friendly relationship between Japan and Sri Lanka.
