Visit to Japan by Mr. Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, United Nations Secretariat
1. Mr. Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, United Nations (UN) Secretariat, will visit Japan from Monday, January 18th to Friday, January 22th at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
2. During his stay in Japan, Under-Secretary-General Khare will exchange views with senior officials of the Government of Japan who are in charge of matters related to the UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKOs). He will also deliver a special lecture at “the 7th International Peace Cooperation Symposium,” hosted by the Secretariat of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters, Cabinet Office.
3. Amidst the ongoing strategic review of the UN Peace Operations that began in 2014, Japan has announced further contributions to PKOs at both the 1st and 2nd Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping. This is a timely opportunity for the Government of Japan to exchange views with Under-Secretary-General Khare on enhancing the effectiveness of PKOs.
4. This visit is expected to further strengthen coordination with the UN towards proactive contributions by Japan to PKOs in order to maintain the peace and stability of the international community.
