Settlement construction by Israel (Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Kawamura)

1. The Government of Japan deeply deplores the information that the Israeli government has approved construction of housing units in settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
2. Settlement activities are violation of international law, and Japan has repeatedly called upon Israel to fully freeze settlement activities.
3. The Government of Japan strongly calls upon the Israeli government to refrain from any unilateral act that does not contribute to resuming the peace negotiation and to desist from implementing the above-mentioned plan of construction for the sake of progress in the peace process.
