Appointment of Ambassador in Charge of Sport Diplomacy

  1. 1. On June 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) decided to establish a post of Ambassador in charge of Sport Diplomacy in order to further promote sport diplomacy and appointed Mr. Jun Shimmi, Director General for Cultural Affairs, as Ambassador.

    2. The post of Ambassador in charge of Sport Diplomacy is established on the basis of the proposals made in the final report by the Panel of Experts on Strengthening Sport Diplomacy (PDF)Open a New Window, which held meetings for approximately one year from 2014, in view of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

    3. Ambassador in charge of Sport Diplomacy will make efforts to promote further international exchanges and contributions in the field of sports as a representative of MOFA, and also will provide appropriate support for the internationalization of Japan’s sport figures/organizations.
