Emergency Grant Aid for Syrian Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, etc. Affected by Cold Wave

February 24, 2015

1. On February 24, the Government of Japan decided to extend Emergency Grant Aid of 6 million US dollars through international organizations including the World Food Programme (WFP) in support of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), etc. affected by cold wave.

2. This emergency grant aid is to provide winterization non-food items (NFIs) and foods, etc. for socially vulnerable people including Syrian refugees and IDPs, because the severe cold wave developed in January resulted in the shortage of winterization NFIs in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

3. This aid is implemented to realize further expansion of humanitarian assistance in the Middle East which was announced recently by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as well as a part of “Enhancing Diplomacy Towards Stability and Prosperity in the Middle East” which is the second pillar of the “3-Pillar Foreign Policy in Response to the Terrorist Incident Regarding the Murder of Japanese” announced recently by Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida.
