Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Announcement of the Final Result of the Presidential Election in Afghanistan
1. On September 21 the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan announced that former Minister of Finance Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was elected as President in the Afghan presidential election (see note).
(Note) The first round of voting was held on April 5, and the final round of voting was held on June 14.
2. The Government of Japan welcomes the agreement between Dr. Ghani and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who were both presidential candidates, to form a Government of National Unity, and the completion of the presidential election process, and expects that a stable administration will be formed promptly through cooperation by those concerned.
3. In partnership with the international community, the Government of Japan will support the efforts of the Government of Afghanistan and Afghan citizens so that their aspirations for stability and development in their country, which the people of Afghanistan demonstrated by voting in the presidential election, are accomplished.
