Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Presidential Elections in Ukraine
1. The Government of Japan warmly congratulates on the fact that presidential elections were held in Ukraine on May 25 in a free, fair, and peaceful manner excluding some areas of Eastern Ukraine, and that candidate Petro Poroshenko secured a win in the elections.
2. The Government of Japan believes three factors are important for the peace and stability of Ukraine: (1) improving the economic situation (2) restoring democracy; and (3) promoting national dialogue and integration. The Government of Japan has announced contribution that include up to 1.5 billion US$ of economic support thus far. The formation of a new democratically-elected Ukrainian government via this presidential election is a major step towards achieving peace and stability in Ukraine.
3. The Government of Japan expects that under the new Ukrainian government, reforms on pressing issues will move ahead, including economic reforms and the promotion of national dialogue and integration. The Government of Japan will also continue to support the new Ukrainian government in pursuing those reforms.
