Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Situation of democratisation in Fiji

1. Japan welcomes the decision by Fiji on the general election to be held on 17 September of this year and expects that the election will be undertaken in a free and fair manner. Japan will advance cooperation for the general election, including its planning for dispatching an election support/observer mission.
2. Japan also appreciates that Australia and New Zealand removed travel sanctions on Fiji, and expects that Fiji will strengthen relationships with these two countries.
3. Japan is willing to cooperate in the effort by Fiji to promote democratisation.
