The Fourth Japan-EU Conference on Tajikistan-Afghanistan Border Management

1. Japan and the EU will co-host the Conference on Tajikistan-Afghanistan Border Management in Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan on Tuesday, March 4 and Wednesday, 5.

2. The conference will be held with participation of government officials of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and will focus on (1) the implementation of Border Management Strategy, (2) cross-border operations (security, drug and illicit products trafficking control), (3) relation to the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan in 2014, (4) cross-border services and transparency and accountability, (5) border management training, and (6) cross-border trade facilitation as the main subjects. The Government of Japan will dispatch a lecturer on operations of customs in Japan.

3. Japan and the EU have been cooperating in strengthening border control in Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries since 2008. The conference will take place as a follow-up to the last Japan-EU Summit held in November 2013. Japan and the EU as global partners will continue to tackle global challenges together.
