Emergency Assistance to the Kingdom of Tonga for Cyclone Disaster

1. On January 20, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods worth 13 million yen ( portable Jerry Cans, etc ) to the Kingdom of Tonga, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Tonga following serious damage by the cyclone.

2. In the Kingdom of Tonga, extensive damages were caused by Cyclone Ian which hit on 6-12 January , and on January 11, the Government of Tonga, declared the State of Emergency. The Government of Tonga reported, as of January 16, 1 person was killed, 1 person is in critical condition, around 3,000 people were affected.

3. In response to the request from the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between the two countries.
