Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the decision of the European Council to hold the first intergovernmental conference on accession negotiations with Serbia

1. Japan welcomes the decision of the European Council on December 20 in Brussels to hold the first intergovernmental conference on accession negotiations with Serbia in January 2014.
2. Japan expects that, through the accession negotiations, peace and prosperity not only in the Western Balkans but also in the Europe as a whole will be promoted.
