Emergency Assistance to the Republic of Palau for Typhoon Disaster

1. On Friday, November 15, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods worth two million yen (portable generators, sleeping pads, etc.) to the Republic of Palau, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Palau following serious damage from Typhoon Haiyan.

2. In Palau, extensive damages were caused by Typhoon Haiyan which cut across in early morning on November 7, and on December 8, President Remengesau declared a National State of Emergency. The Government of Palau reported, as of November 11, almost all residences and public facilities were destroyed and the electricity supply and water supply had not yet restored in Kayangel State which is the most damaged. Then, many roads have been blocked by debris making accessibility to medical institutions etc. difficult in some areas of the island of Koror and Babeldaob.

3. In response to the request from the Government of Palau, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between Japan and Palau.
