Emergency Assistance to the Republic of the Sudan in Response to the Floods Disaster

1. On Thursday, August 8, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 16 million yen (water purifiers, sleeping pads, etc) to the Republic of the Sudan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request following serious damage from the floods.

2. In the whole of Sudan, continuous heavy rain from August 1 to 4 has caused floods. According to a news release by the Government of Sudan (as of August 5), 34 people have been killed and as many as approximately 98,000 people have been affected. Since more than 12,000 household properties were damaged, many people have been forced to take refuge.

3. In response to the request from the Government of Sudan, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims, as well as in light of long-lasting friendly relations between Japan and Sudan.
