The Israeli decision to amend the 2005 Disengagement law
(Statement by Press Secretary ONO Hikariko)

March 24, 2023
  1. The Government of Japan is seriously concerned by the Israeli Knesset’s recent decision to amend the 2005 Disengagement law allowing for resettlement in areas of the West Bank. The move clearly goes against the efforts by the international community to de-escalate tensions.
  2. Settlement activities are in violation of international law and undermine the viability of a two-state solution. The Government of Japan strongly urges the Israeli authorities to fully freeze its settlement activities, including in the areas designated by the above-mentioned decision.
  3. The holy days for Muslims and Jews should be a moment of peace. The Government of Japan once again calls on all parties concerned for maximum restraint and responsible behavior refraining from incitement and violence.
