The 4th Japan-New Zealand Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation

The 4th Japan-New Zealand Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation took place on March 8 in Wellington.
- The Joint Committee Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Ms. KAJI Misako, Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, and Mr. Iain Cossar, General Manager, Science, Innovation and International, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Attendees were representatives from both countries' relevant ministries and agencies.
- During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the recent developments of national science, technology and innovation policies and bilateral cooperation activities. The committee also discussed the situation of bilateral cooperation and future directions in areas of common interests (advanced technology, marine research, environment and disaster risk reduction). After the meeting, a signing ceremony of memorandum of cooperation was held between the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science).
- The Joint Committee agreed to hold the next meeting in Japan at a date to be coordinated through diplomatic channels.

- (1) In October, 2009, the Japan- New Zealand Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement was signed by then Foreign Ministers Okada and McCully in Tokyo. Article 5 stipulates the establishment of a joint committee meeting as an intergovernmental framework to discuss science and technology policy matters related to the implementation of the agreement and to review activities and results based on the agreement.
- (2) Based on this agreement, in October 2010, the first Japan-New Zealand Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation was held in Tokyo. It has been held alternately in both countries.
