The ongoing escalatory developments surrounding Israel and Palestine
(Statement by Press Secretary ONO Hikariko)
February 27, 2023
- The Government of Japan is seriously concerned about the ongoing escalatory developments surrounding Israel and Palestine with continued clashes and violence causing civilian casualties including those during the Israeli Security Forces’ operation in Nablus on February 22. We also condemn the Huwara terror attack on February 26 that killed two Israelis, followed by the rampage against Palestinians on the same day, underscoring that terrorism cannot be justified for any reason.
- The Government of Japan reiterates its call on all the parties concerned to exert maximum restraint in order to ease the tensions as a matter of urgency. In this regard, the Government of Japan welcomes the holding of five-party (Jordan, Egypt, the U.S., Israel and Palestine) meeting hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and strongly hopes that the commitments shown in the resulting Aqaba Joint Communique will be faithfully fulfilled.
- Japan, for its part, will strengthen its efforts to urge both Israel and Palestine and make contributions towards restoring calm in coordination with the international community.
