The 15th Japan-Italy Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation

The 15th Japan-Italy Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in Tokyo on January 18 in the hybrid form.

  1. The Joint Committee Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Ms. KAJI Misako, Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Gianluigi BENEDETTI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic. Attendees included representatives from the relevant ministries and agencies of both countries.
  2. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on recent national policies and programs in the fields of science, technology and innovation, also in view of the Japanese Presidency of the G7. Both sides presented the current bilateral research collaborations extending to space, energy, environment, disaster risk reduction, medicine, and nuclear physics. In light of the recent meeting in Rome between the two Prime Ministers, the Committee discussed future direction to expand the bilateral framework of cooperation to reinforce our partnerships, including those leading to industrial cooperation.
  3. The Joint Committee decided to hold the next meeting in Italy, at a date to be coordinated through diplomatic channels.

  • (1) At the summit held in Rome In May 1987, then Prime Minister Takeshita and then Prime Minister De Mita agreed to promote science and technology cooperation between Japan and Italy as well as actively tackle the development of frameworks concerning science and technology. In October 1988, an Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation between Japan and Italy was concluded.
  • (2) The Joint Committee has been held 14 times based on the Agreement. The last (14th) meeting was held in Rome in June 2017.
