G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

  1. On February 27, commencing at 11:10 p.m. for approximately 2 hours, a G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in a virtual format with participation by Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
  2. During the meeting, the G7 reiterated its profound condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Regarding the situation throughout Ukraine, the Ministers concurred to share information and hold discussions among the G7 members, and to continue close coordination among the G7 on future responses, including sanctions, and support for Ukraine and countries in the vicinity.

Minister Hayashi stated that, as announced on February 27 by Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio, Japan has decided to impose sanctions that include the freezing of assets of persons related to the Government of Russia, including President Putin, and supports taking measures, such as excluding selected Russian banks from the SWIFT messaging system. Minister Hayashi conveyed that Japan is ready to provide emergency humanitarian assistance in the amount of 100 million US dollars via international organizations, as humanitarian assistance for Ukraine including for people evacuating the country. The other G7 members strongly welcomed Japan’s decision.
  4. In the second half of the meeting, for approximately 45 minutes, a discussion was held joined by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba of Ukraine. Minister Kuleba thanked the G7 for providing a range of support and expressing its position, and explained the view and position of the Government of Ukraine regarding the current situation. The G7, including Minister Hayashi, reiterated its firm support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and that the G7 stands with the Government of Ukraine and its people during this challenging time.
