Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI)    Champions’ Network Virtual Roundtable

 On May 24, 2022 from 8 pm(Japan Time), Mr. UESUGI Kentaro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) Champions’ Network Virtual Roundtable hosted by UK. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Parliamentary Vice-Minister UESUGI stated that Sexual violence in conflict is a serious crime that threatens the international peace and security, and in order to prevent this violence, It is important to punish perpetrators and end the culture of impunity by strengthening the judiciary.
  2. He also mentioned that Japan has provided support the work of the International Criminal Court(ICC) and UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC) to strengthen judiciaries to prosecute perpetrators, as well as provided medical and economic empowerment support through international organizations such as UN Women,UNFPA and the Global Fund for Survivors of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (GSF).
  3. Lastly, Parliamentary Vice-Minister UESUGI expressed that Japan, as a champion country of the initiative, will continue to provide various support and make efforts to prevent sexual violence in conflict in cooperation with the UK and other like-minded countries.
