Japan-Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On March 3, commencing at 5:20 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Ms. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia focusing mainly on issues regarding Ukraine and Myanmar. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- Minister Hayashi stated that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is a unilateral change of the status quo by force, which shakes the entire international order and severely condemned Russia. He also expressed his intention to closely cooperate with Indonesia to deal with this situation. In response, Minister Retno explained that Indonesia shares the same view and the two Ministers confirmed that they would continue to closely work together.
- The two Ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar. Minister Hayashi reaffirmed that Japan will continue to fully support the initiatives of ASEAN and the two Ministers exchanged views on implementation of the “Five-Point Consensus”. In response, Minister Retno explained recent developments and Indonesian efforts in ASEAN. The two Ministers concurred to continue working in close coordination in response to the situation in Myanmar.
- The two Ministers exchanged views on the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” and the “ASEAN Outlook for the Indo-Pacific” and coordination to advance concrete cooperation in fields such as infrastructure development, human resource development and maritime safety.
- The two Ministers confirmed that they would continue to closely work together regarding issues such as the East China Sea, the South China Sea and North Korea.
