The Situation in the Republic of the Sudan (Statement by Press Secretary YOSHIDA Tomoyuki)
October 26, 2021
- On October 25, the Sudanese Armed Forces detained Prime Minister Hamdok and other senior government officials, and the Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council Al-Burhan from the Armed Forces dissolved the Transitional Government. In addition, the Sudanese security forces opened fire on the anti-military demonstrators, leaving a large number of casualties.
- The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about this situation and strongly condemns the actions taken by the Sudanese Armed Forces that undermine the transition to civilian rule based on the Constitutional Declaration. We also call for an immediate, safe and unconditional release of Prime Minister Hamdok and other senior government officials detained.
- The Government of Japan closely cooperates with the international community and calls for the restoration of transition to civilian rule in Sudan.
