Japan-Brunei Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On October 12, commencing at 4:40 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Brunei Darussalam. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Motegi praised the utmost efforts being made by Brunei to realize a visit by the ASEAN Special Envoy, agreed as part of the “Five-Point Consensus” at the ASEAN Leader’s Meeting held in April. In response, Minister Erywan expressed his gratitude for the strong support from Japan and explained the current situation on his planned visit to Myanmar as the Special Envoy.
  2. In response, Minister Motegi stated that he had emphasized the importance of the Special Envoy’s early visit not only to Myanmar but also to all relevant countries and that it is necessary to work persistently since visits and conversations of the Special Envoy are a continual process. In response to this, Minister Erywan expressed his determination to exert every effort to make his visit as the Special Envoy a meaningful one.
  3. The two ministers concurred to continue working in close coordination in order to turn around the situation in Myanmar and for the success of the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings under Brunei’s chair.
