Emergency Assistance to Sri Lanka in response to the Garbage Mound Collapse at the Disposal Site

  1. Today, April 17, upon the request of the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (portable jerry cans, tents, sleeping pads, water purifier, generator) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Sri Lanka in response to the damage caused by the collapse of garbage mound at the disposal site in Meethotamulla, Colombo. 
  2. Upon the request of the Government of Sri Lanka, and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Sri Lanka, Japan decided to provide emergency assistance to Sri Lanka to meet its humanitarian needs. 
【Reference】
On April 14, the collapse of the garbage mound at the disposal site in Meethotamulla, Colombo, resulted in a large number of those affected including the loss of lives, and much physical damage. According to the Government of Sri Lanka, as of April 16, 21 people died, 11 people have been injured, and approximately 980 people have been affected.
