Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Security Council Open Debate on “Mine Action and Sustaining Peace”

On April 8 (EST), an open debate on “Mine action and sustaining peace” was convened at the UN Security Council at the initiative of Vietnam, the president of the Council. As the promoter of mine action in the world, Japan appreciates the efforts made by Vietnam.
- At the open debate, Japan, which is not currently a member of the Council, issued a written statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations.
- The statement recognized the importance of the role played by the Security Council in mine action, and expressed Japan’s commitment to promoting mine action globally in coordination with the United Nations and in accordance with the spirit of UNSC Resolution 2365 on mine action.
- Japan will continue to actively contribute to discussions on mine action in the international arena, including the Security Council and the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
