Japan’s Contribution to the Trust Fund for the purpose of defraying the costs of participation of the members of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf from developing States in the meetings of the Commission
November 17, 2020
- On Tuesday, November 17, at the 30th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) held online, the Government of Japan announced that it would contribute (approximately 29,000 US dollars) to the Trust Fund for the purpose of defraying the costs of participation of the members of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf from developing States in the meetings of the Commission.
- The Commission, established in accordance with UNCLOS, assumes the important role of considering the information on the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles submitted by States Parties in accordance with UNCLOS, and making recommendations. The said trust fund was established to support the members of the Commission from developing States who are facing financial difficulties to participate in the meetings of the Commission.
- Through this contribution, it is expected that the participation of the members from developing States in the meetings of the Commission will be facilitated and lead to the smooth and speedy consideration of the submission regarding the outer limits of the continental shelf.
