Signing and Exchange of Notes concerning Grant Aid to Myanmar “the Project for Providing Various Life-saving Services to Vulnerable Children and Families facing Multiple Humanitarian Crises”

March 8, 2024

On March 5 (on March 4 local time), in New York, H.E. Ms. SHINO Mitsuko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary / Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, and Ms. Kitty van der Heijden, Deputy Executive Director for Partnerships, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), signed and exchanged notes for the Grant Aid “the Project for Providing Various Life-saving Services to Vulnerable Children and Families facing Multiple Humanitarian Crises” (grant amount: 690 million yen).

  1. In Myanmar, even three years after the coup d'état in February 2021, fighting and attacks in various parts of the country have not abated at all. In fact, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar has continued to deteriorate. Since the coup, approximately 2.45 million civilians have been internally displaced (IDPs), the situation remains difficult due to the protracted conflict, and thereby humanitarian assistance for these IDPs continues to be an urgent issue.
  2. In response to this situation, this project, in cooperation with UNICEF, aims to improve the livelihoods and access to basic social services for the IDPs, mainly children and women who are socially vulnerable, by improving access to healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation, providing educational opportunities, and supporting child protection.
